Dr. Christy A. Walker
Since 2003, Dr. Christy A. Walker has guided hundreds of students and clients through the career exploration process. Dr. Walker currently serves as a Career Placement Manager for NPower, a national non-profit that helps young adults from underserved communities and military veterans enter the workforce through technology. She previously served as Career Pathway Director at Tech Elevator, a tech boot camp, and as the Director of Career Services at Durham Technical Community College, where she organized and managed career services for a college of nearly 20,000 students aged 16-60+.
Prior to her current role in the community college, Dr. Walker served in career counseling and advising roles at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at James Madison University, where she worked with undergraduate and graduate students from orientation to Ph.D. She also has taught chemistry courses at Norfolk State University.
Dr. Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. After roles as an environmental chemist and as an engineer, she decided that higher education was the perfect fit for her interests and skills.
She earned a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Old Dominion University and a doctorate in Higher Education from Northeastern University. Her dissertation research involved understanding how the impostor phenomenon and academic self-efficacy affect persistence in African-American female undergraduate STEM students.
